Many American cities have seen population shifts in the last few decades. For some, this change is detrimental, with population shifting towards areas with more to offer. The opposite effect can be seen in Tyler, Texas. Its population jumped from 83,650 to over 100,000 since the 2000 census. The city gains new residents for many reasons, including its location, attractions, work and schools. The new development Tyler provides the space and housing needed for this growing population.
Tyler is found in northeast Texas, in Smith County. It has its own local airport, the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. Rail and highway access are also beneficial. The weather can affect access, as it is unpredictable in Tyler. The summers are hot and humid, while its winters are cooler.
Tyler has a newly dedicated downtown. In the spring of 2008, the city launched a Business, Arts and Culture District. There are many sponsored events in the downtown area, involving art walks and exhibitions, musical performances, and other gatherings.
Other attractions in Tyler include its many museums, parks, wineries and art centers. There are museums that collect everything from antiques to model trains. Tyler also has a museum of aviation, of local history and of its rose industry. There are a few safari parks as well as a zoo. Water and skate parks round out the entertainment options.
Tyler has a public school system similar to most U. S. Cities. However, it also has private schools to offer its citizens. Tyler hosts the campuses of the University of Texas at Tyler and the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler.
In the city, there are many work opportunities that could be fueling the new development. Medical professionals are employed in high numbers, due to the influx of patients from the surrounding area. Factory work is prevalent, with companies such as Trane, Tyler Pipe, Carrier, or Brookshire Grocery all employing a significant work force. Tyler is mostly known for its roses. It is the home of twenty percent of the global rose sales. Surprisingly, the city also seems to be an excellent place to retire as well as work. It was rated highly as a place for retirees.
The real estate market in Tyler has grown to match the population. New developments are common, and can range from a small, single family home to an entire neighborhood. One new development, The Crossing, attempts to combine an appreciation of nature with a set of new complexes. Another newly built home comes complete with guest house, pool, and garage for $1.5 million. Yet it is still possible to find homes for a lower price range, with new homes available at under $50,000.
